heirloom handcrafts— made to honor those who came before—to last for those who will come after
This sheepskin is bark tanned and dyed with indigo. Like the ocean, the color looks different in different lights. Sometimes the blue looks bright, sometimes it’s more grey—like a storm is coming. Sometimes there are hints of green. Sometimes the blue is so deep. There are a few browny-green spots that remind me of seaweed. The lighter curly parts remind me of the froth of waves. The fiber texture of this sheepskin is plush and springy. It has some great tight coils and some looser ones too. If this earth wasn’t filled with magic, I’d call this sheepskin otherworldly. But it very much is a reflection of the beauty and magic of this world—particularly the water and sky. 41×24.5”
When measuring, I measured down the middle for both length and width. Some parts of the hide will be longer and some will be shorter. I measured the leather side. Fiber often extends beyond the leather.
I live with dogs, so please consider that if you are extremely allergic. These hides will become softer with time and use. I wash and comb these sheepskins multiple times, but there will be some debris in the fiber, but it’s impossible to get it all out at once. They will also smell like lanolin to some degree or another, which not everyone is used to. Dye will fade over time. The rate of fading will be determined by use, sunlight, and frequency of washes. You can wash them sparingly (if you’d like more info on this, check out my faq). If you ever decide you don’t want this hide, please compost it or leave it to decay into the woods—don’t throw it in a landfill!
